How to Compare Two PDF Files for Differences
2026-10-07 · themgdev team
Comparing two PDFs by switching between tabs is slow and unreliable. A moved line, changed total or replaced image can hide in a long document. A visual PDF comparison marks every changed area so you can review the differences directly.
How to compare PDF files
- Open Compare PDFs.
- Add the older PDF first.
- Add the newer PDF second.
- Run the comparison.
- Review the changed pages and download the report.
Both files are rendered and compared on your device. They are not uploaded for processing.
What the comparison can find
The tool compares the rendered pages rather than only extracting words. It can therefore catch text edits, replaced images, changed colors, shifted objects, spacing changes and different page sizes. If one version has extra pages, those pages appear as changed too.
This makes visual comparison useful for contracts, proofs, policies, tenders and reports whose appearance matters as much as the wording.
Prepare the files for a cleaner result
Make sure the same logical page appears at the same page number in each file. A cover page added to one version shifts everything that follows and makes every later page look different. Use Organize PDF to align page order first.
Scans can also produce noise because two captures of the same sheet rarely have identical pixels. Check scan quality with PDF Scan Doctor and compare pages at a similar size and orientation.
Review every marked change
A red area means the pixels differ. It does not decide whether the change is important. Read changed clauses, totals, names and dates against the source documents before approving a final version.
