How to Password Protect a PDF

Password protection encrypts a PDF so the file cannot be opened without the password. It is useful for statements, contracts, identification documents and other files that need an extra barrier before they are emailed or stored.
How to password protect a PDF
- Open Protect PDF.
- Add the document you want to secure.
- Enter a strong password and confirm it.
- Encrypt the file and download the protected copy.
- Open the copy once to confirm that the password prompt appears.
The file and password stay in your browser during encryption.
Choose a password people cannot guess
Length matters more than clever substitutions. A longer passphrase made from unrelated words is easier to type and harder to guess than a short word with one number added. Do not use the recipient's name, the company name or a date printed inside the document.
Send the password through a different channel from the PDF. If the file goes by email, share the password by phone or an approved messaging service.
What PDF encryption protects
Encryption protects the file while it is closed. Once a recipient opens it with the correct password, they can read the contents and may be able to save or capture them. Use access controls and a trusted sharing method when a document needs tighter handling.
Password protection is also different from redaction. If a document contains information the recipient must never see, remove it first with Redact PDF. Encrypt the cleaned copy afterwards if needed.
Keep the original and the password safe
PDF encryption has no useful recovery route when the password is lost. Keep an unencrypted original in a secure location and store the password in a password manager. If you later want a copy that opens without a prompt, Unlock PDF can remove protection when you know the current password.
