How to Redact a PDF Permanently

Permanent PDF redaction removes sensitive information from the file. Drawing a black rectangle over text is not enough. The words may remain underneath the shape and can sometimes be selected, copied or recovered.

How to redact a PDF safely

  1. Open Redact PDF.
  2. Add a PDF that contains selectable text.
  3. Enter the exact names, email addresses, account numbers or phrases to remove.
  4. Review every match before export.
  5. Download the flattened redacted copy.

The tool places the redactions and rebuilds the output pages so the original text layer is not left behind.

Redaction is different from covering text

A highlight, shape or white box changes appearance. Secure redaction changes the saved content. This distinction matters when you share legal records, invoices, identification documents, medical paperwork or any file that contains personal information.

If you only need to correct visible wording, use Edit PDF. Use redaction when the old information must be removed.

What about scanned PDFs?

A scan contains page images rather than selectable words. Exact text matching cannot find content that does not exist as text. Run OCR PDF & Image to identify the wording, then use a workflow designed for image redaction and inspect the result carefully.

How to verify the result

  • Open the exported PDF and search for each removed phrase.
  • Try selecting text across the redacted area.
  • Check every page visually at a readable zoom level.
  • Remove hidden file properties with Remove Metadata when the document itself may identify its author.

Keep the untouched original somewhere secure. Share only the reviewed redacted copy. All processing in the tool happens in your browser.
