How to Remove Metadata From a PDF

A PDF can contain information that never appears on the page. Author names, document titles, keywords, editing software and creation details may travel with the file when you publish or email it. Removing metadata creates a cleaner copy for sharing.
How to remove metadata from a PDF
- Open Remove Metadata.
- Add the PDF from your device.
- Run the cleanup.
- Download the cleaned copy.
- Check the file properties in your PDF viewer.
The cleanup happens in your browser. The original document is not uploaded.
Which PDF properties are removed?
The tool clears common fields including title, author, subject, keywords, creator and producer. These fields can identify a person, organization or software workflow even when the visible pages contain none of that information.
The same tool can clean image files by re-encoding them without EXIF data such as camera details and stored location fields.
Metadata removal is not redaction
Metadata cleanup does not remove visible text, comments or information printed on a page. If the document shows a name, account number or confidential paragraph, use Redact PDF and inspect the exported file.
It also cannot guarantee removal of every custom object a specialist application might embed. For high-risk publication, review attachments, annotations, form values and hidden layers with the software used by your organization.
When should you clean metadata?
- Before publishing a document on a public website.
- Before sending a template outside your organization.
- Before sharing photos that may contain location data.
- After redacting a sensitive PDF and before final distribution.
Keep the original if its creation history matters for your records. Share the cleaned copy.
