How to Scan Documents to PDF on Your Phone

You can scan a document to PDF with a phone camera when a flatbed scanner is not available. The difference between a useful scan and a frustrating one comes down to lighting, camera position and page order.

How to scan a document to PDF

  1. Place the page on a flat surface with good, even light.
  2. Open Scan to PDF on your phone.
  3. Photograph each page from directly above.
  4. Choose color, grayscale or high-contrast black and white.
  5. Move the photos into the correct reading order.
  6. Create and download the A4 PDF.

The photos are processed on your device and do not need to be uploaded.

Take clearer document photos

Keep the camera parallel to the paper so the page does not become a trapezoid. Move the phone closer rather than using digital zoom. Avoid direct flash on glossy paper because a bright reflection can erase text.

Use color for stamps, signatures and highlighted pages. Grayscale works well for ordinary office documents. High-contrast black and white can make clean printed text easier to read, but it may remove faint handwriting.

Put pages in order before export

Check the thumbnail sequence before building the PDF. It is easier to move one photo now than to repair a finished document later. If the final file already has pages out of order, use Organize PDF.

Check a long scan before sending it

Open the result and confirm that every page is present, upright and readable. For larger files, PDF Scan Doctor checks for likely blank, duplicate, blurry, faint, skewed and inconsistent pages.

If the recipient needs to search or copy words from the scan, finish with Searchable PDF.
