Round avatars are everywhere — team pages, chat apps, social profiles, comment threads — but most tools crop to a square and let CSS do the rounding. That works until the image is used somewhere without that CSS, at which point the corners reappear.
Cropping to an actual circle solves it at the source. The area outside the circle becomes transparent in the file itself, so the image is round wherever it is placed: in a document, an email signature, a slide, or a platform that does not round avatars for you.
The optional ring is worth considering for light interfaces. A photo with pale edges can bleed into a white background and lose its shape entirely; a thin ring in a contrasting colour restores the boundary without adding visual weight.
The corners outside the circle have to be transparent, and JPEG has no transparency — saving as JPEG would fill them with white or black. PNG keeps them clear.
No. The image is scaled to cover the circle and centred, so the proportions are preserved and only the edges outside the frame are trimmed.
512 pixels suits almost every profile picture. Go to 1024 if the image will also be used larger, and 128 or 256 for an avatar in a comment thread.
A coloured ring separates a round avatar from the background behind it, which matters when the photo's edges are the same tone as the page.
