When someone sends a report, a brochure or a product sheet as a PDF, the pictures inside it are often the thing you actually need — the photograph for a listing, the chart for a slide, the scanned signature for a record. Screenshotting the page loses resolution and picks up whatever was around it.
Extraction gets the real thing. A PDF stores its images as separate objects, and pulling them out gives you the pixels that were embedded, at the size they were embedded, rather than a re-render of the page at screen resolution.
It is worth knowing what will and will not come out. Photographs and scans are embedded images and extract cleanly. Logos, charts and diagrams are frequently vector drawings with no image object to extract, and text never is — for those, rendering the page with PDF to PNG is the right tool instead.
PDF to PNG renders each page as a picture. This tool pulls out the images that were placed into the document, at whatever resolution they were embedded — so a photo comes out as the photo, not as a page containing it.
Because there were none to find. Charts, logos and diagrams are often vector artwork rather than embedded pictures, and text is never an image. Use PDF to PNG for those.
PDFs can store images in colour spaces and 1-bit mask formats that cannot be converted directly in a browser. Anything smaller than 16 pixels on a side is also ignored, since those are almost always spacers and rules.
