About Favicon Generator

A favicon is a small file with an outsized job. It identifies your site in a crowded tab bar, in a bookmark list, in browsing history and on a phone home screen — usually at sixteen or thirty-two pixels, where only the boldest shapes survive.

Getting it right means shipping several sizes rather than one. Browsers want an .ico and small PNGs, iOS wants a 180 pixel touch icon, and Android wants 192 and 512 pixel versions for the home screen and splash. This tool produces the whole set from a single source image, plus the link tags that tell browsers where to find them.

The .ico is built as a genuine multi-size icon file containing the 16, 32 and 48 pixel versions, so the operating system can pick the right one instead of scaling a single image badly. Everything is rendered in your browser, which means an unreleased logo never touches a server.

Frequently asked questions

What sizes do I actually need?+

A favicon.ico containing 16, 32 and 48 pixel versions for browsers, a 180 pixel apple-touch-icon for iOS home screens, and 192 and 512 pixel PNGs for Android. All six are produced here.

Do I still need a favicon.ico?+

Yes. Browsers and crawlers still request /favicon.ico by default, and some older software only looks for that file, so shipping it costs nothing and avoids 404s in your logs.

What source image works best?+

A square image at least 512 pixels wide, with a simple shape and strong contrast. Anything detailed turns to mush at 16 pixels — favicons are read as a silhouette, not a picture.

What if my logo isn't square?+

It is centred and scaled to cover the square without distorting the proportions. For a wordmark, crop to the symbol first — the full name will not be legible at favicon size.

Where do the files go?+

In the root of your site, next to index.html. Then paste the generated tags into your page's head — they are included as the last download.

Is my logo uploaded?+

No. Every size is rendered in your browser using canvas, and the .ico is assembled in the page. Unreleased branding stays private.
