A PDF form stays editable after you fill it in. That is helpful while you are working and a problem once you send it: the recipient can change an amount, a reviewer's software can reset a field, and different viewers can render the same form in visibly different ways.
Flattening ends that ambiguity. The text you typed, the boxes you ticked and the options you selected are painted into the page itself, and the interactive layer is removed. The result opens identically everywhere and cannot be altered without leaving a trace.
It is the right final step for anything being submitted rather than collaborated on — an application, a signed agreement, a timesheet, a claim. Keep the unflattened original in case the answers change, and send the flattened copy.
